El alfabeto y los sonidos

The alphabet, vowels, tricky letters & syllables

A1≈20 min

En este capítulo

  • Pronounce the five Spanish vowels purely — one letter, one sound, always.
  • Master the tricky letters: ñ, h, j, ll, rr, c, g, q, z.
  • Divide words into syllables and read aloud confidently.

Las cinco vocales — the five vowels

LetraSuena como…Ejemplos
a"a" in fathercasa · amiga
e"e" in bet — never "ee"mesa · elefante
i"ee" in machineisla · piscina
o"o" in go — pure, no "w" glideoso · pelota
u"oo" in ruleuva · calle… no wait: uva · mundo

Letras con trampa — tricky letters

LetraSonido / sound
ñ"ny" in canyon → niño, España. A full letter, between N and O.
hAlways silenthola, ahora, hijo.
jStrong throaty "h" (la jota) → jefe, jugar, trabajo.
ll / yLike "y" in yes → calle, lluvia, yo.
rr / rrr rolled strongly: perro (dog) vs pero (but). Initial r is also rolled: ropa.
cBefore e/i: "th" (Spain) or "s" (LatAm) → cine, gracias. Before a/o/u: "k" → casa.
gBefore e/i: throaty h → gente, gi… genial. gue/gui: u silent (guerra); with ü: u heard (pingüino).
qOnly in que / qui ("k" sound, u silent) → queso, aquí.
z"th" in Spain, "s" in LatAm → zapato, feliz.

Las sílabas — Spanish is syllable-timed

Spanish rhythm comes from evenly-timed syllables: es-pa-ñol (3), es-tu-di-an-te (5), bue-nos dí-as. Vowels next to each other often split; h doesn't separate them.

es·tu·dian·te · u·ni·ver·si·dad · bue·nos dí·as

Tap the syllables — feel the machine-gun rhythm.

Spanish has 27 letters. Never skip ñ when spelling — año (year) and ano are very different words.
If you can read Italian music notes, you can read Spanish: almost every word is pronounced exactly as written. Spelling is 95% predictable from sound.

Lee en voz alta — read aloud

Hola, me llamo Ana.

Hello, my name is Ana.

El niño juega con el perro.

The boy plays with the dog.

Javier come queso y jamón en la calle.

Javier eats cheese and ham on the street.

✏️ Ponte a prueba

1. Which letter is always silent in Spanish?

The letter h: hola, hora, ahora, hijo.

2. What's the difference between perro and pero?

perro = dog (rolled rr) · pero = but (single soft r).

3. How is ll usually pronounced?

Like English "y": calle ≈ "KAH-yeh", lluvia ≈ "YOO-vya".

4. "Girasol" syllables: gi - ra - sol. How many?
5. The word "queso" starts with which sound?

¿Cuándo usar el presente?

Trabajo en un hospital y estudio por la noche.

Habits & routines.

El sol sale por el este. Los gatos duermen mucho.

General truths.

— ¿Entiendes? — Sí, entiendo perfectamente.

Present situations. (Note: Spanish often uses simple present where English says "do you understand?".)

My grandma doesn't sleep well and goes to bed early. (dormir o→ue, acostarse o→ue)

Conozco un restaurante que sirve tapas buenísimas.

I know a restaurant that serves amazing tapas.

Chunk these power pairs: quiero + inf. (I want to), puedo + inf. (I can), necesito + inf. (I need to), prefiero + inf. — after a conjugated verb, the second verb stays infinitive. No exceptions.

a nosotrosnos gusta / nos gustanNos encanta viajar.
a ellos / ustedesles gusta / les gustanA ellos les gustan las playas.

Ejemplos

Me gusta el café, pero me gustan más los tés.

Me gusta leer y me encanta escuchar música.

Infinitives always take the singular form. Encantar = "to love".

Do you like soccer? — Not at all, I prefer basketball.

A mi hermana le gustan los libros de ciencia ficción.

"A mi hermana" clarifies le — whose liking? her.

Presente continuo y reflexivos

What's happening now & daily-routine verbs

A2≈22 min

En este capítulo

  • Build the gerund (-ando / -iendo / -yendo).
  • Say what's happening right now.
  • Describe your whole day with reflexive verbs.

El gerundio

TerminaciónEjemplo
-ar → -andohablar → hablando · trabajar → trabajando
-er/-ir → -iendocomer → comiendo · vivir → viviendo
i→y between vowelsleer → leyendo · ir → yendo · traer → trayendo
stem change (-ir)dormir → durmiendo · decir → diciendo · pedir → pidiendo

— ¿Qué estás haciendo? — Estoy escribiendo un correo y escuchando música.

estar + gerund = right now.

Present simple vs continuous: Trabajo en un banco (general) vs Hoy estoy trabajando desde casa (temporary). Spanish leans on the simple present much more than English — ¿Qué haces? often translates "what are you doing?".

Verbos reflexivos — la rutina diaria

PersonaPronombreEjemplo: levantarse
yomeMe levanto a las siete.
te¿A qué hora te levantas?
él/ellaseElla se levanta temprano.
nosotrosnosNos levantamos tarde los domingos.
ellosseEllos se levantan tarde.

Routine verbs: despertarse (wake up, e→ie) · levantarse · ducharse · vestirse (e→i) · cepillarse los dientes · maquillarse / afeitarse · acostarse (o→ue) · dormirse.

Posición del pronombre

Me ducho por la mañana. → Ahora me estoy duchando. / Estoy duchándome. / Voy a ducharme.

Before a conjugated verb — or attached to gerund/infinitive (keep the written accent: duchándo, duchár…).

Mi día — modelo

"Me despierto a las seis y media, pero no me levanto hasta las siete. Me ducho, me visto y desayuno un café con tostadas. Después salgo de casa a las ocho."

"I wake up at 6:30 but don't get up until seven. I shower, get dressed and have coffee with toast. Then I leave home at eight."

✏️ Ponte a prueba

1. "I am eating":
2. Gerund of leer:
3. Gerund of dormir:
4. "I shower every day":

5. Where does the pronoun go in "quiero ducharme"?

Marcadores y usos

MarcadorEjemplo

últimamente, recientementeÚltimamente he dormido poco.

Uses: ① unfinished time periods (today, this week) ② life experiences ③ recent news: ¡Ha nacido el bebé de Ana!

In Spain, "yesterday" actions often still use pretérito perfecto if the day feels connected: Esta mañana he visto a Juan. In most of Latin America, the indefinido is preferred: Esta mañana vi a Juan. Both are correct — pick your region's habit.

✏️ Ponte a prueba

1. yo + hablar (pretérito perfecto):
2. Participio of hacer:
3. Participio of ver:

4. "Have you ever eaten paella?"
